Morning routines, bedtime rituals … for some, they are a comfort, for others a chore. Yet most of us underestimate the power of habits in our lives.

Think about it. Do you resist brushing your teeth, or is it simply part of your morning routine? Do you struggle to decide which side of the road to drive your car on, or do you automatically rely on rules you learned long ago? When you install a behavior into your daily routine – you no longer have to remind yourself to do it. That frees you from having to problem solve all the mundane repetitive functions of life so you can use your mind for something more creative.

Years ago, I decided that since eating and moving were normal functions of life, I’d install routines that would serve my health rather than undermine it. And after years of being overweight, I am now more fit that I was 30 years ago….without diets. How? Routines and re-categorizing! You see, much like our computers, our minds categorize things. When I considered exercise “recreation”, my mind considered it optional. Then I re-categorized it as “hygiene”. Yep, same category as flossing my teeth! That made it “non-negotiable”, and not something open to mental bargaining. Next, I did the same thing with my eating routine. I removed it from the “fun” category and placed in the “health” category. Don’t get me wrong, I ENJOY eating! I’ve simply learned that since I just like to eat, I might as well choose something healthy.

Routines have been the key to eliminating my weight issues. They’ve also allowed me to grow my business, recover from grief, and create a marriage I cherish. In fact, I believe in the power of routines so much that I consider them the foundation of my “one set of tools for life” process.
